About the museum
The Muzej Domovinskog rata Dubrovnik (Dubrovnik Homeland War Museum) is housed on the ground floor of the Imperijal (Imperial Fortress) on Mount Srđ above Dubrovnik. It was first opened to the public on 5 August 2008, on Dan domovinske zahvalnosti (Homeland Thanksgiving Day). The fortress, built by the French in 1812, is for the people of Dubrovnik a symbol of heroism and of the defence of the town in 1991.
The material for the museum, more than 1,500 original war photographs, around 120 hours of video recordings, and dozens of objects and documents, was collected during 2008 in cooperation with veterans’ associations and prominent Dubrovnik veterans. The museum collected almost all the material on recent history through donations and field research, and only a small part by purchase.
The permanent display “Dubrovnik u Domovinskom ratu 1991. – 1995.” presents about 500 objects in four sections: the fall of the Republic of Ragusa and the history of the fortress, the attack of 1991, the liberation operations of the Croatian Army, and the suffering of the population, civilian buildings and cultural monuments. Among the material are documents, photographs, war diaries, plans of minefields, weapons, uniforms, unit flags and the original flag from Srđ from 1991. The museum also has a Spomen-soba (Memorial Room) for the fallen Dubrovnik defenders in the Palača Sponza (Sponza Palace).
