About the museum
The Muzej grada Iloka is a general and local heritage museum, founded in 1952 as the Gradski muzej at the initiative of Antun Bauer. It opened on 1 November 1952, and its first director and curator was Josip Meštrović. In 1969 it moved into the restored Odescalchi Castle. During the Homeland War (October 1991 – 1997) the museum operated from its seat in the Muzejski dokumentacijski centar (Museum Documentation Centre) in Zagreb.
Since 2005, research, the restoration of the monument complex and the castle, and a new museum display have been carried out as part of the project for the renewal and revitalisation of the cultural heritage of Ilok – Vukovar – Vučedol. The museum is in the fortress, on the site of the most important part of the medieval royal town of Nikola Iločki from the late 15th century.
The permanent display across the two floors of the castle follows the discontinuous cultural, artistic and spiritual development of Ilok: from the Copper Age, the Roman cemetery and the golden age of the Iločki family, through the Ottoman period and the administration of the Odescalchi princes, to the 19th century, the world wars and the Homeland War. On the first floor of the eastern wing is the Art Gallery, on the second floor the Spomen-galerija znamenitih Iločana (Memorial Gallery of Distinguished People from Ilok), and an ethnographic display in the attic.
