Šumarski muzej Bošnjaci

Muzej Hrvatskih šuma (Museum of Croatian Forests) in the former old school in Bošnjaci presents forestry in the Spačva Basin and the Slavonian pedunculate oak (hrast lužnjak).

Opening hours unknown

About the museum

The initiative to establish a forestry museum in the Spačva Basin was launched in the 1960s and 1970s and, after the Homeland War, was pursued intensively. From 2004 objects were collected and an area of around 500 square metres was prepared in the former old primary school in the centre of Bošnjaci, a building from 1869. The museum opened in 2007.

The display presents the nearer and more distant history of forestry in this region, especially the Spačva Basin, known for its forests of pedunculate oak, or Slavonian oak. Some objects were donated by residents of Bošnjaci, mainly traditional tools for making wooden objects and tools for work in the forest and for timber transport, and most of the items were brought from forest stations in the area of the Uprava šuma podružnica Vinkovci (Vinkovci branch of the Forest Administration).

The collection is divided into sections that follow the work in the forest: from sowing seeds, through felling and processing timber assortments and the export of logs, to the protection of the forest and of the plant and animal species that live in it. The museum is part of Hrvatske šume (Croatian Forests) and is open to visitors so that memories of part of the national and forestry history are preserved, and to show how forestry was practised in the past and how it is practised today.
