About the museum
The first references to Anija manor in its present location date from 1482, when it belonged to Herman Soye and a stone fortified residence, a so-called vassal castle, was built there. Some of its walls survive in the cellar of the present manor house. The manor takes its name from the Hanijõgi river, and geese (hanes) also appear on the coat of arms of Anija rural municipality.
The present two-storey late-baroque manor house was built during the ownership of Matthias Georg Staël von Holstein in 1796–1801. Later the manor belonged to the von Ungern-Sternbergs and to Marie von Wahl, and in 1919 it was nationalised. In 1924–1975 and 1990–2002 a primary school operated in the main building.
In 2019–2020 the manor complex was restored. In the manor house an experience-based permanent exhibition, “Mõisa aja lugu”, has been set up, based on the research of art historian Juhan Maiste. In the manor park there is a two-kilometre learning trail, “Meelte ja kogemuste tee” (Path of the Senses and Experiences), an event centre in a former barn, and the manor café.
