About the museum
The Betti Alver Museum presents the lives and legacy of two people from Jõgeva: the poet Betti Alver and the composer Alo Mattisen. They were born in different eras, but both are dear to Estonians. The museum is in one of Jõgeva’s oldest buildings, the historic residential house of the railway workers, which has been thoroughly renovated and adapted as a modern museum.
The Betti Alver exhibition gives an overview, with texts and photographs, of her childhood in Jõgeva, her development into a well-known poet, her work and her importance in Estonian culture. It also reflects the poet’s fate during the tragic events of the 1940s. Alo Mattisen’s life was short, but his patriotic songs set in motion the Singing Revolution; the museum shows music videos, a film and a photo collection.
The museum also collects and preserves materials related to the history of the town of Jõgeva and organises about ten art exhibitions a year.
