About the museum
The Liehtalanniemi museum farm is located on Niinisaari, about 14 kilometres from the centre of Puumala towards Imatra. The site has been inhabited since 1899, and the farm's buildings date from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Liehtalanniemi was restored as a museum, and a 22-hectare nature conservation area was established in connection with it in 1984. The museum is owned and maintained by the municipality of Puumala.
The farm has been preserved as a traditional whole, comprising the group of old grey buildings, small fields, slash-and-burn forests and pasture clearings (laidunhaat). In the farmyard, besides the main building, there are the farm's original cowshed, barn, sauna and clothing and food granaries. The museum has also rebuilt, among other things, a potato pit, a net shelter and a pistekota (traditional hut).
Liehtalanniemi is a living museum farm: in summer there are animals on the site, and environmental management work is done with traditional methods by grazing and mowing. In Puumala the farm's last permanent resident, Jalmari Reponen, who lived there alone from 1948 to 1976, is remembered. Near the museum there is a guided nature trail in the protected area, and on the shore there is a mooring place for boats, a swimming beach and camping places.
