About the museum
The local heritage museum owned by the City of Pieksämäki was founded in 1952 and was active until 1985, after which its activities declined. The museum opened to the public on 2 October 1955 in the attic floor of the library building behind the fire station. More than 300 of the roughly 500 objects in the collection were put on display.
When the yard building of the fire station was demolished in autumn 1985, the objects were temporarily moved to the buildings of Iso-Pappila; in summer they were displayed on the upper floor of Iso-Pappila. In spring 2021 some of the objects were moved to the basement of the Kulttuurikeskus Poleeni cultural centre, where they can be viewed without barriers all year round. The local heritage exhibition, put together by Pieksämäki-Seura and the City’s culture department, includes part of the collection of old objects and photographs by Pekka Kautovaara, a history teacher and photographer at the upper secondary school, of local craft and tradition bearers.
