About the museum
The Savon radan museo operates in the former railway station building of Pieksämäki, which was completed in 1889. The building was made to plans drawn up for the Oulu railway, and it was extended in 1902 in keeping with the original style. The museum is located on platform 6 of the present railway station.
The museum opened to the public on 1 October 1989, exactly one hundred years after the first train ran from Kouvola along the Savo Line to Kuopio. The museum is owned by the City of Pieksämäki and is run in cooperation with the Savon radan museon perinnekerho (Savo Line Museum Heritage Club).
The exhibition presents railway history with an emphasis on the Savo Line and the Pieksämäki surroundings. On display are railway construction tools, parts of a steam locomotive, traffic control, communication and signalling equipment, station interiors, a model railway, and tools from the railway workshops. In the station park there is, among other things, the diesel shunting locomotive Vk12 from 1937.
