About the museum
Rödhamn lies only ten nautical miles from Mariehamn and has for centuries been a sheltered night harbour for seafarers. The islands of Långö, Gloskär and Rödö formed the last safe harbour before setting out onto the open sea on the crossing between Sweden and Finland. Pilots and lighthouse keepers lived here with their families, and countless vessels sought shelter and waited for better weather.
The old radio beacon remains on Rödhamn, together with lighthouse keepers’ dwellings and farm buildings. An exhibition was opened in the radio beacon as early as 2001 under the name Rödhamns museum, and in summer 2024 a renewed exhibition was opened. At the same time the site took back the name Radiofyren på Rödhamn.
The exhibition tells about the history of the radio beacon, the pilot service and the archipelago during the war. It also highlights the sights and historical remains of the Rödhamn islands, as well as the guest harbour and its history. The exhibition is run by Ålands museum and is in Swedish, but the texts can be read in several languages on the museum’s website.

The path from the guest harbour to the exhibition is gravelled and about 250 metres long, but steep in places, and the last metres cross a flat rock slab and natural stone slabs. The building has no ramps; three steps lead to the entrance, and there are low thresholds indoors. The texts on the exhibition boards can be read on the museum’s website, and the pictures are audio-described where applicable.
