About the museum
The Sakkola-museo opened to the public in summer 2000 in Lempäälä, next to the Kuokkalan museoraitti (Kuokkala museum street). The museum presents the cultural history of the Sakkola parish, which was located on the Karelian Isthmus, and is run by the Sakkola-säätiö (Sakkola Foundation).
The museum’s objects were received as donations, and most of them were brought from Sakkola during the evacuation journeys. There is a permanent basic exhibition and a theme exhibition that changes every year. The basic exhibition includes glass and ceramic tableware, handwoven textiles, a Lotta uniform (lottapuku), a model of Sakkola church, a village map hand-copied by Yrjö Raaska, and war memorabilia.
The exhibition also tells of the models for the characters in Väinö Linna’s novel The Unknown Soldier (Tuntematon sotilas), namely the Sakkola farmers Viljam Pylkkä and Toivo Ruuna. Sakkola-related literature and souvenirs can be bought at the museum.
