About the museum
The collection of the Tampereen suojeluskunta- ja lottamuseo was founded in 2003, when the Tampere reserve officers' and reserve NCOs' associations and the Häme Military District headquarters handed over the objects and material they had gathered to the museum. The museum is run by the Tampereen Suojeluskunta- ja Lottamuseoyhdistys ry association, founded in June 2004. In 2011 the collection contained about 3,000 objects and 1,500 photographs.
The museum presents the origin and development of voluntary national defence, especially in North Häme, that is, in today's Pirkanmaa region, from the early decades of independence. Significant parts of the collection are a set of 130 different Lotta cups, Lotta uniforms, the equipment of a skiing civil guardsman and the instruments of the Messukylä civil guard wind band. The museum also has a document and photograph archive and a large collection of newspapers and books.
The museum was long located in Tammela in Tampere, but in 2026 its exhibition spaces moved to the Manttaali house in Lempäälä. The permanent exhibition is on the second floor of the house, and the museum is run by volunteers.
