About the museum

The information centre in the Dr.-Georg-Karl-Haus was opened in 2000 by the district of Deggendorf. It lies on the edge of the Isarmündung nature reserve, where the Isar flows into the Danube and shapes a floodplain landscape of European importance with oxbow lakes, floodplain and litter meadows and nutrient-poor grassland.

On roughly 250 square metres, the main exhibition "Lebensraum Isarmündung" explains how the area came into being and which animals and plants live there. It includes aquariums with fish from the Isar and Danube – renewed in 2023 and extended with a large outdoor tank – as well as a controllable model of the floodplain's water dynamics.

Inside the building, the Deggendorf Water Management Office also presents an exhibition on the history of the Isar, and the Plattling Beekeeping Association runs a teaching apiary on the grounds. An outdoor area of around 8,000 square metres with circular trails, interactive stations and a playground complements the indoor spaces.
