About the museum
The museum was founded in 1969 by the Syndesmos Grammaton kai Technon tou Nomou Kozanis (Association of Letters and Arts of the Prefecture of Kozani), with the teacher Konstantinos Siabanopoulos as its inspiration and founder. The first collection was set up in late 1968 and early 1969 in rented shops. From 1975 to 1984 it was housed in a building of the Filoptochou Syllogou Kyrion Kozanis, and the collection was moved four times in all. The Natural History Museum was founded in 1979.
The present building was erected on the museum’s plot in 1980–1983 and officially inaugurated on 10 October 1987. In 1993 a new four-storey wing was added.
The exhibition is organised in sections: natural history from the Palaeolithic to the present day; an archaeological and Byzantine section from 7000 BC to 1453; a historical section from 1453 to 1944; and a folklore section from 1640 to 1960, the most important part of the collection. In the basement there are rocks and fossilised insects and animals, while on the top floor life in a Kozani house from Ottoman rule to the late 1950s is recreated. The museum also has an art gallery, a collection of stamps (1861–2004) and a collection of radios (1930–1960).
