About the museum
The ancient city of Palatiano lies 20 km north-east of Kilkis, at the foot of the Krousia mountain range. Its position is strategic, above the valley of the Gallikos and its tributaries, and it offers excellent control of the surrounding roads. Many scholars identify the city with ancient Ioron, which, however, has not been confirmed by inscriptions.
The visible ancient remains belong to a Roman town, which was built over older settlements and flourished from the 1st century to the end of the 3rd century AD. Habitation seems to have been continuous, with many late walls standing on older ones.
The Roman city extends over the slopes of the hill and over its strategically important summit, in an area of 3.5 stremmata, enclosed by a tripartite polygonal circuit wall, which possibly enclosed public buildings. In a prominent position, in the eastern part of the ancient city, stands a temple-like honorary monument (heroon). On the western inner side of the building there is a base, on which four of the five statues of members of the honoured family were placed; their names are carved on the marble slabs of the front of the base.
