About the museum
The Archontiko Dolgkira is one of the oldest mansions in Siatista and was built at the beginning of the 18th century. It belonged to the merchant Dimitrios Dolgkiras, of Constantinopolitan origin, who travelled widely to the Danube, Smyrna and Constantinople. Around 1840 he and his wife Eleni Memou renovated the house with materials and craftsmen from Constantinople, and folk painters completed the painted decoration.
The heirs gave the mansion to the cultural association “Markides Pouliou” of Siatista, which took on its restoration. In 2003 the building was renovated and converted into a folklore museum.
On the ground floor are storerooms and a winter room with a fireplace. The upper floor has painted friezes with hunting scenes, a corner with icons, reception rooms and a bedroom with embroidered decorations. The walls show flowers, birds and distant cities, and a traditional female costume of Siatista is on display. The rooms hold objects more than 200 years old, donated by people from Siatista from all over the world.
