About the museum

The National Resistance Museum of the Municipality of Ilioupoli operates as an independent legal entity under public law. It aims to honour the epic of 1940–1944 and to keep the ideals of the fighters of the National Resistance alive for younger generations. The first ideas for its creation took shape in 1986–1990 under Mayor Dimitris Kintis. In cooperation with the resistance organisations, a public plot of land in National Resistance Square was selected and an application for its transfer was submitted.

The exhibition covers the period from the start of the Greek-Italian war in 1940 and the German invasion of 6 April 1941 until the liberation of the country in October 1944. The collection includes manuscripts, front pages of newspapers, proclamations, tools of the illegal press, magazines, photographs, military uniforms and warfare equipment, sound recordings, works of art and personal objects of historical figures of the Resistance.

The municipality invites schools and families to visit the museum. At weekends the space opens for painting exhibitions, national celebrations and group guided tours.
