About the museum
The Halmúzeum (Fish Museum) opened on 14 July 2022 in the old wing of the former Fekete Sas inn. The Renaissance-style residential building was built around 1510 by the Serbs who settled here; in the Middle Ages it operated as a merchant house, and later it also served as the upper town hall, a guesthouse, a casino and a district library. After five years of renovation, it received its present function. The museum is run by the Magyar Halászati Kultúráért Alapítvány (Hungarian Foundation for Fishing Culture) and forms part of the “museum quarter” taking shape around Kossuth Lajos utca.
The 170-square-metre exhibition space welcomes those interested in angling, fishing and the world of fish. Among the several hundred objects in the collection are angling equipment, baits, reels, fish spears, old publications and catalogues. At the entrance stand the stone sculpture “Potyka” by Beretvás Csanád and a Ganz-made horse-drawn wagon (lórét), used on the narrow-gauge tracks of the fish farms.
