About the museum
In Ráckeve the idea of founding a museum arose in the 1870s, when the district judge Ludaics Miksa formed a private collection. At the turn of the century, the rich Bronze Age finds uncovered during the construction of a dyke made the founding of a museum urgent. In 1961 the Ministry of Culture gave permission, and on 26 September 1962 it authorised the operation of the local-history-oriented Árpád Múzeum; the collection was initially housed in a single room of the ruined Savoyai Castle (Savoyai-kastély).
The museum’s task is to collect, process and present archaeology, ethnography, history and the fine-art material linked to its collecting area. In recent years it has also considered the protection of the natural environment along the Danube important.
On the ground floor and in the entrance hall, the new permanent exhibition “Valaki kell, hogy őrizzen…” (Someone Has to Guard…) opened on 12 April 2002; it presents an era through archaeological remains and early medieval tools.
