About the museum
Bauxite mining in Gánt began in 1926. For its fiftieth anniversary the Fejér megyei Bauxitbányák Vállalat (Fejér County Bauxite Mines Company) built the museum adit and the exhibition on the rim of the former Bagoly-hegy open-cast mine; it presents the golden age of Hungarian bauxite mining between 1914 and 1990.
The exhibition consists of an outdoor section in the courtyard, where larger mining machines are displayed, and an underground museum adit. In the latter there is a series of posters on the history of mining in the Vértes-hegység (Vértes Mountains), as well as the tools, machines, safety systems and characteristic workplaces of bauxite mining, including a 1:1 scale model of a mine. The two former bauxite transport locomotives standing in the courtyard may be of particular interest to families with small children.
Next to the museum, a geological trail (Bauxitföldtani Park) built in the former open-cast bauxite mine of Bagoly-hegy leads along the mine wall, which is some 28 metres high.
