About the museum
The museum was built in Csákberény, at the foot of the Vértes, in the centre of the former Merán estate. Its aim is to present worthily the hunting and forestry past and present of the Vértes, building on the historical and material memories of the Lamberg estate of Csákberény, then of the Merán estate and of the Esterházy estate of Csákvár.
Alongside the permanent diorama exhibition presenting the southern Vértes, the museum has a poachers’ exhibition; its backbone is twenty-five 18th- and 19th-century guns, which show traces of poaching (sawn-off barrels, shortened stocks), supplemented with snares and traps. Outdoor panels present the history of the Merán and Esterházy families and the life of Öhlmann Péter, the famous chief huntsman of the Merán family. Inside, visitors find paintings, hunting badges, old forestry surveying instruments and original timber ledgers from Selmecbánya.
In the courtyard of the institution stands the sculpture of Saint Hubertus, patron of hunters, the work of the Transylvanian woodcarver Kanalas Sándor. The museum is linked to a 4.6-kilometre nature trail, with a game-watching point on it.
