About the museum
Coal mining in Oroszlány began in 1937; the museum's exhibition opened in 1979, on the 40th anniversary of this. The mining history collection is located in the former mine buildings on the outskirts of the town, a few hundred metres from the Majki Kamalduli Remeteség (Majk Camaldolese Hermitage), at the edge of a small wood.
In the main building, in the former lamp room and the room where shifts were read out, the exhibition presents the history of coal mining in Oroszlány and everyday life at the mine. Among original machines, visitors can learn about the miners' working conditions and can even handle real tools.
The museum remains a place for keeping mining traditions alive and for family, experience-based learning; according to the local council, the renovated building is heated, so it can be visited all year round.
