About the museum
The county council decided to establish a county museum in 1902; the first exhibition opened in 1904 on the second floor of the County Hall. Its first director was Laczkó Dezső, a teacher of the Piarist order, after whom the institution was named in 1990. Because the collections were growing rapidly, a separate building became necessary: the palace on Erzsébet sétány was handed over in 1925.
In the 1930s, the country’s first rural open-air ethnographic exhibition, the Bakonyi Ház (Bakony House), was set up beside the museum. The county museum organisation was founded in 1962, and the natural-history collection moved to Zirc in 1972. From 2007 several exhibition sites came under municipal or other management; since 2013 the museum has been run by the municipality of Veszprém (Veszprém Megyei Jogú Város) as a city museum with county reach. In 2006 it received the title “Az év múzeuma” (Museum of the Year).
The new permanent exhibition Emlékgép (Memory Machine) opened with the support of the programme series European Capital of Culture 2023. It arranges the objects and stories of Veszprém in chronological order, from archaeological finds to the community memory of the city. The institution also includes the Bakonyi Ház, as well as the Hősök Kapuja (Gate of Heroes) and the Tűztorony (Fire Tower) in the castle district.
