About the museum
The cylindrical lower part of the 48-metre Tűztorony (Fire Tower), rising at the south-western end of the castle, is probably medieval; its date of construction is not known. On 17th-century drawings of the castle a stocky tower still stands on the spot, and beside it the castle's corner bastion was built around 1660. The 1810 Mór earthquake damaged the tower; the town council considered demolishing it, but the Veszprém nobility opposed this.
The tower was heightened in late Baroque style between 1811 and 1814 to plans by Tumler Henrik, and received a circular balcony for the watchman who observed day and night; from then on a fire watch lived in it, hence the name Vigyázótorony (Watch Tower). Its last major repair was in 1984. The clock of the tower plays Csermák Antal's Verbunkos on the hour, and the circular balcony offers a fine view of the districts of Veszprém.
