About the museum
The Mining and Industrial Open-Air Museum (Bányászati és Ipari Skanzen) of the Tatabánya Museum opened in 1988 in the operating building complex of the former XV-ös akna (XV Shaft). In Hungarian terms, it was the first open-air museum set up in a natural environment that presents the living and working conditions of industrial workers, primarily miners.
The offices furnished in the skanzen, an outdoor machinery display and a walk-through mine area evoke coal mining; houses built on the model of the characteristic residential and public buildings of the former Tatabánya mining colonies present the everyday life of miners. The aim of the site is also to keep mining traditions alive.
Among the permanent exhibitions are a school history exhibition, the history of local mine transport (the kasház, or cage house), a blacksmith's workshop and an underground mine area. During opening hours, the skanzen also welcomes visitors with further exhibitions and programmes.
