About the museum
The Majki Camaldolese Hermitage is a Baroque heritage ensemble consisting of 17 hermit houses, the Foresteria monastic building and the surviving tower of the former church. The Camaldolese monks, the “silent friars” (néma barátok), settled here in 1733 and lived in the hermitage until 1782.
On the upper floor of the Foresteria, the exhibition A hallgatás ereje (The Power of Silence) presents the history of the Camaldolese order in general and in Hungary. Four rooms commemorate the stay of II. Rákóczi Ferenc in France and his connections with the French Camaldolese. The ground-floor exhibition presents the rooms of the hunting lodge and Count Esterházy Móric, who was born here; in the cellar and ground-floor spaces, everyday and festive rooms reconstructed from objects of nearly thirty Hungarian museums and collections can be seen. Hermitage no. 6 shows the daily life of a monk, no. 7 the prior’s dwelling; in a separate room, local archaeological finds from the 18th to 20th centuries are displayed. In the crypt of the church, a holographic film, A lélek zarándokútja (The Pilgrimage of the Soul), recalls the Baroque memento mori. The gardens, with 18th-century terraces, a cave chapel and a 19th-century English-garden section, are also part of the visit.
