About the museum
The manor-style building was erected in 1927 and previously operated as a school, which determined the number and size of its exhibition rooms. The collection, named after Berey József, was established in 1988 on the initiative of the local council and of the late director of the Szatmár Museum in Mátészalka, Farkas József. The renovated building, financed from a grant, was handed over in October 2013; with partial barrier-free access, it has also become accessible for people with reduced mobility.
The building houses two permanent exhibitions and two smaller gallery rooms. The historical exhibition displays stones from the castle of Ecsed, old maps, and utensils excavated during the 1975–77 excavations at Sárvár. In the ethnographic room, tools for farming, fishing and csíkászat (a local traditional craft), weaving and spinning equipment, and objects of animal husbandry and household life present the way of life, superstitions and customs of the Ecsed marshland. The gallery hosts temporary exhibitions.
