About the museum
The Boldog Gizella Főegyházmegyei Gyűjtemény (Blessed Gizella Archdiocesan Collection) preserves and researches the art heritage of the Archdiocese of Veszprém. The institution was founded in 1985 by Bishop Szendi József of Veszprém; its founding director was Canon Márton Antal. The collection holds late Renaissance and Baroque goldsmiths’ work, Orthodox liturgical objects, wooden sculptures, graphic works and liturgical textiles; these were assembled by Apostolic Administrator Klempa Sándor and Bishop Bánáss László.
The collection preserves, among other things, the 15th-century Venetian chasuble of Vetési Albert, a 19th-century Viennese copy of the coronation mantle, the crozier of Cardinal Hornig, and the objects of Cardinal Mindszenty from his time as Bishop of Veszprém. The Veszprém cathedral was founded by Queen Gizella; from the 13th century the bishops crowned the queens of Hungary.
Because of the reconstruction of the castle district, the former exhibition venue has closed; the collection’s exhibitions can currently be seen in the Biró–Giczey House. The late Baroque residential house was built in 1772 by Canon Giczey István; inside, the wall panels of its large hall show garden and landscape scenes, and on the ceiling is Phaethon’s sun chariot. Together with the canons’ garden, the visit is a complete experience.
