About the museum
Vass László, a master shoemaker and founder of Vass Shoes, is a significant collector of Hungarian and international fine art. He bought his first works in the 1970s; the first significant piece was by Barcsay Jenő, with whom he later formed a lifelong friendship. By the early 1990s the private collection had grown to the point where it could present museum material.
Renovation of the buildings at Vár utca 3–5–7 in Veszprém began in 2001, and the Modern Képtár opened its doors in 2003. The collection, which focuses mainly on constructive movements, presents the constructivist, minimalist, concrete and conceptual art of the post-war decades as well as fresh works by internationally renowned artists, and it is continually expanding.
The permanent exhibition, renewed every two years, presents nearly 150 works. The gallery is one of the exhibition venues of Művészetek Háza Veszprém.
