About the museum
The Tegularium is Veszprém’s brick collection. It was established in 1977 as part of the Dunántúli Építőipar-történeti Gyűjtemény (Transdanubian Construction History Collection), which after the regime change continued to operate as a foundation under the name Magyar Építőipari Múzeum (Hungarian Construction Industry Museum). It was founded by Fodor József, an agricultural engineer and teacher, who recognised the significance of the marks and markings on fired bricks and roof tiles.
Since 2006 the collection has been housed in the cellar system of the Dubniczay Palace and in the 16th-century cannon bastion section connected to it. The exhibition presents the remains of brick and tile production from the Roman period to the last quarter of the 20th century; some 1,200 template-made, scratched, handwritten, sealed and stamped bricks are presented as evidence of Hungary’s industrial, age, cultural and art history. The exhibition, expanded with new pieces from the collection, reopened in January 2023.
The Tegularium is one of the venues of the Művészetek Háza Veszprém; it also offers brickmaking workshops and educational sessions.
