About the museum
The Cinkotai Tájház (Cinkota Heritage House) stands in the oldest part of District XVI. Cinkota became part of the capital in 1950, but of the surrounding villages it has best preserved its rural character, so it is still a living community marked by a unique Slovak–Hungarian folk heritage.
The heritage house is housed in a three-part peasant house built more than a century ago, which the local council bought and renovated in 2008. The building consists of a best room (tisztaszoba), kitchen, living room, pantry, cellar and stable, and evokes the life of the Cinkota peasantry. Ethnographic collecting began in the early 1960s; most of the objects on display were donated by local residents: utensils, folk furniture, festive and everyday costumes. A special sight is the row of textiles with Gothic-lettered monograms.
The heritage house is also a venue of local community life: several times a year family and folk programmes and craft workshops are held here, and from spring to autumn guided tours and museum-education sessions are offered.
