About the museum
The Kertvárosi Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény is located in a venerable villa in Mátyásföld, which recalls the bourgeois world of the turn of the century. The area was transformed almost from nothing, from the wooded hunting ground of the Beniczky family, into an elegant environment blossoming under the garden-suburb idea, where art-patron intellectuals and the middle class spent their daily lives.
The permanent exhibition presents the history of the five predecessor settlements of District XVI – Cinkota, Rákosszentmihály, Sashalom, Mátyásföld and Árpádföld – from the Sarmatian, Avar and Hungarian conquest-period archaeological finds to the civic development of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The art colonies of Rákosszentmihály, the development of the Sashalom housing estate and the villa quarter of Mátyásföld are also discussed.
The collection is also the centre of the district's local history research: researchers organise and archive the material and written remains of Kertváros and publish them in the popular series Kertvárosi Helytörténeti Füzetek (Kertváros Local History Booklets).
