About the museum
The Tóth Ilonka Emlékház commemorates Tóth Ilonka, a martyr of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence, a young medical student who was executed. The building is the birthplace of its namesake; on the initiative of the Tóth Ilonka Szülőházáért Alapítvány, and with the support of the District XVI local government, it was saved and turned into a memorial site.
The memorial house was opened on the 60th anniversary of the revolution, on 23 October 2016. With the help of the original documents placed in the building, visitors can get to know the world of the 1950s and the short, exemplary life of Tóth Ilonka.
Beneath the garden of the building a modern education centre operates, where a stylised copy of the courtroom of the Fővárosi Bíróság (Budapest Municipal Court) can also be seen, in which the show trial of Tóth Ilonka and her co-defendants took place. The memorial house and the education centre are venues for unconventional history lessons, conferences and museum education sessions.
