About the museum
The collection gathers, processes and presents the material and other remains of the cultural development of Dombóvár and its region. It is based in the building on Szabadság utca, which is surrounded by a forecourt in the town centre: literary-history panels, old trees and the sculpture group Álmodozók (Dreamers) by Varga Gábor welcome visitors. In the courtyard behind the building stand the Napkorongos Életfája (Tree of Life with Sun Disc) by Bocz János, a steam-locomotive water well and a bread oven.
The permanent exhibition guides visitors through the town’s past in three rooms. The first covers the period from the Stone Age to the Iron Age; the second covers the Roman-era Iovia fort and the excavations around Alsóhetény, and the finds from the six medieval castles of Tinódi Lantos Sebestyén’s time and from the excavations at Gólyavár. The third, modern-history room presents the relics of the Esterházy family, the effects of the railway construction begun in 1870 and the main events of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The museum-education sessions also feature a sculpture group depicting a Roman scene of everyday life. The collection is now part of the municipal cultural institution of Dombóvár.
