About the museum
The Fekete István Múzeum was founded in 1995 by agricultural engineer and local historian F. Bodó Imre. It is Dombóvár’s first museum and is free for all visitors. The collection was expanded in 2001, 2011 and 2021, and the writer’s relics are now displayed in four rooms.
Alongside the writer’s personal belongings, manuscripts, identity papers, school reports, honours, books and poems, the exhibition also includes models of the animal characters: Vuk the fox, Kele the stork, Csí the swallow and Hú the owl. The rooms are decorated with paintings, graphic works and Gölle weavings (Gölle is Fekete István’s home village).
In the courtyard stand the writer’s statue, unveiled in 1997, and the Tree of Life (Életfa) by woodcarver Bocz János. The memorial site is cared for by the Fekete István Kulturális Egyesület (Fekete István Cultural Association), which also publishes books.
