About the museum
In Dombóvár the first permanent railway-history exhibition is associated with Beles Lajos, chief foreman, who with colleagues and railway enthusiasts opened the collection in the building of the Vontatási Főnökség (Traction Department) in 1987–1988. Today’s exhibition has been operating since 2013 in the former railway control point rented from MÁV, known as the Bunker building.
The core of the collection consists of the objects and documents of the Traction Department: locomotive plates, teaching aids, locomotive clocks, professional books and service documents, supplemented by the material of other departments and by donations. The exhibition shows how the railway, from its appearance in southern Transdanubia through the 20th century, made Dombóvár a railway hub and the economic, commercial and cultural centre of the region.
The collection is run by members of a local association. During railway events, such as the Museum Night, the museum opens to visitors with continuous guided tours.
