About the museum
The museum's collection began in 1953 in Körmend, when the school principal Dévényi Ferenc and the teacher Madáchy Károly gathered historical, guild-history and ethnographic objects, which were initially kept in the school on Petőfi tér. From the mid-1960s it operated as the Rába Local History Collection; in 1980 it received museum status and moved into Batthyány Castle. In 2004 it took the name Dr. Batthyány-Strattmann László; since 2013 it has been maintained by the town council as part of the Körmendi Kulturális Központ, Múzeum és Könyvtár (Cultural Centre, Museum and Library of Körmend).
The collection comprises more than fifteen thousand objects, a significant part of which are tools of local crafts. The ethnographic material from the Őrség is particularly rich, as are the historical documents from the Batthyány archive and the shoe history collection.
In the castle, visitors can learn about the history of the town and the Batthyány family, including a late 19th-century salon and dining room. In the Parádés Istálló (Parade Stables) they can explore the craft workshops of Körmend. The museum also includes the hunting lodge built in 1884 in the castle garden, whose exhibitions deal with the history of the castle garden, Carolus Clusius and the bird collection of Molnár Lajos.
