About the museum
The collection is set up in the Škerlak farmstead, which the brothers Sándor and Ferenc Škerlak built of brick in the first third of the 20th century with the support of a relative from America. At one time one of the largest distilleries in the surrounding area operated in the farmstead. The Ethnological-Historical Collection was opened in 1997 on the initiative of the Zavod za kulturo madžarske narodnosti Lendava (Institute for the Culture of the Hungarian Nationality, Lendava) and the Madžarska narodna skupnost (Hungarian National Community); the Pomurski muzej Murska Sobota and the museums in Szombathely and Körmend also took part in its creation.
The collection has more than 500 objects from abandoned houses and shows an example of a large farm holding. Visitors can see an antique-furnished kitchen and bedroom, a carved room (rezbarska izba), a beehive made of wooden beams with straw hives, a loom and a school bench with textbooks. Among the more interesting objects are the boiler for distilling brandy, farm tools, a bride’s chest, a mortar and plaited baskets made of willow twigs and linden bast. In the courtyard is the Vilinski vrt (Tündérkert, Fairy Garden), intended for the preservation of native tree species.
