About the museum
Časarov mlin (Časar’s Mill) lies beside the Ratkovski potok (Ratkovski Brook) on the edge of the forest in the village of Berkovci. Construction of the water mill began in 1930; at first it was driven by a large wooden mill wheel, which had worn out after seventeen years, so in 1947 a Francis turbine was installed that uses the captured water. In the brick extension there is a piston engine of Hungarian make, which supplemented the drive in dry periods with wood gas. Two roller mills were installed for grinding, and within the mill complex there was once also an oil press. The mill ceased operation at the end of 1968.
Today the mill is a protected cultural-technical monument. Visitors can see the operation of the turbine, the wood-gas engine, a still working hydraulic press for pumpkin-seed oil, the remains of the oil press, the written documentation on the mill and an ethnological collection of tools used on farms and in milling.
