About the museum
The Sindümúzeum is a non-profit, privately owned ethnographic collection in Velemér, presenting the folk art of the Őrség, in particular the objects that carry signs. Its founder is Varga Géza. At first the exhibition could only be seen occasionally, at the Nyitott porták (Open Yards) event of the Őrség; the core of the collection came together in the 1990s.
The name of the museum refers to the sindü, a hand-made roof tile, which is not the same as the zsindely (shingle). The collection includes around one hundred drawn sindü from local roofs and around one hundred sindü donated by people of Velemér. Also on show are Őrség ceramics, a replica of a 7,500-year-old cow sculpture, and the whittled furniture and personal objects of Gyenese Gyula. Visitors can also learn about the origin of Székely script and about the folk, governmental and religious use of Hungarian runic script (rovásírás).
