About the museum
Gorsium was one of the significant settlements of Roman Pannonia, beside Tác. A town developed around the first-century military camp, which remained an inhabited centre in the 3rd and 4th centuries as well. The site also played a role in the administrative and religious life of the province.
Archaeological excavations began in 1958 and have continued ever since. The open-air museum was established in 1962, and the excavated building remains became an archaeological park, where both research and the general public feel at home.
The park surrounds the excavated ruins. The stone monuments can be seen outdoors, and the most significant finds are presented in a permanent exhibition. The institution is run by the Szent István Király Múzeum (Saint Stephen the King Museum), maintained by Székesfehérvár Megyei Jogú Város (the county-rank city of Székesfehérvár). A visit takes roughly two hours.
