About the museum

The history of the founding of the Karcag museum is disputed. According to local research, collecting was organised in autumn 1906 by Joó András, Reformed assistant minister; the first item of the collection was brought in on 4 October 1906. In the same year the folklorist Györffy István, born in Karcag, wrote an article on setting up a Nagykun Múzeum (Nagykun Museum). In 1912 the collection was moved from the Reformed girls’ school to the town hall which had then been built.

The museum bears the name of Györffy István. Its permanent exhibitions commemorate Györffy István, present the heritage of the Cumans and the folk life of Nagykunság, and show the chronicle of Nagykunság.

The museum also includes the Kántor Sándor Fazekasház (Kántor Sándor Potter’s House), the Nagykunsági Tájház (Nagykunság Village Heritage House) and the windmill of Karcag.
