About the museum

The museum operates in a farmhouse with a columned porch on Erkel Ferenc utca in Karcag, which was built in the first half of the 19th century, probably around the 1830s. The building recalls the Karcag great farmers and the redemptus houses, and for almost a hundred years was the home of a prosperous farming family. In 1982 the cultural department of the Szolnok County Council bought it for exhibition purposes, because the then Folk Applied Art Council wished to present the ceramics collected from the world-famous master potter here.

Kántor Sándor was born in Karcag in 1894, trained as a potter and also worked at the Zsolnay factory. From the 1920s he began making decorative vessels, mastering the motifs of the Tiszafüred, Mezőcsát, Pásztó and Gyöngyös traditions and blending them into his own visual world. In 1953 he received the title Master of Folk Art, in 1958 he won the Grand Prix at the Brussels World Exhibition, and in 1978 he was awarded the Kossuth Prize. His vessels with human and animal figures, including the Karcag judge and the bird figures, became famous.

Since November 1982 the exhibition has been continuously open in the rooms of the Fazekasház, presenting the various periods of the master’s work. The house is an exhibition venue of the Györffy István Nagykun Múzeum (Györffy István Nagykun Museum).
