About the museum
The Karcag windmill was built in 1859 by Gál Ferenc from local brick, on a hill surrounded by a brick wall, so that its sails could make better use of the wind. The mill, with a rotating roof section, four sails and a tower (Dutch type), spread in Hungary from the 17th century onwards. Wheat was ground in it until 1949, and grain crops were also crushed; after nationalisation a hammer mill operated on the ground floor. The town once had sixty mills, including eleven windmills; only this one stands today. Its internal equipment has survived intact and can be seen on six levels. The mill is cared for by the Györffy István Nagykun Múzeum (Györffy István Nagykun Museum).
