About the museum

The complex of three buildings at Jókai utca 16 was set up by the museum’s specialists in 1984 as a village heritage house presenting the domestic culture of Nagykunság. In the two-compartment small house the living conditions of Karcag at the beginning of the 19th century can be seen; the street-facing room of the Nagykunság residential house preserves the representative furniture and furnishings of the peasant farmers, and the back living room is furnished with furniture of increasingly bourgeois taste used at the end of the 19th century.

The small house is a saddle-roofed, reed-thatched building with adobe walls and a front porch. One enters the house through the kitchen, the pitar, along a narrow part of the building; the haystack-shaped oven (boglya kemence) of the room recalls the representative space of the redemptus farmhouses. In the pantry are the tools connected with eating; in the farm outbuilding there are agricultural tools, harnesses, barrels and tubs, and in the courtyard stands a dug well with a swing pole (gémeskút).

The village heritage house is an exhibition venue of the Györffy István Nagykun Múzeum (Györffy István Nagykun Museum) in Karcag. The house is currently temporarily closed.
