About the museum
Győr was already a fortified site in the time of St Stephen; the medieval castle enclosed today’s Káptalandomb (Chapter Hill). The town’s importance grew in the 16th century, during the Ottoman occupation: as the strongest fortress of the line of border fortresses, it protected the road to Vienna. From 1537, on the order of I. Ferdinánd, forty years of fortification works encircled the whole town with a wall, protected by seven eared bastions and a half-bastion. In the bastions, built of fired brick, casemates were formed for the cannons.
The Turks captured the castle in 1594 after a long siege, but in March 1598 imperial troops retook it in a surprise attack. The shattered wing of the Fehérvári-kapu (Fehérvár Gate) has since been preserved by the people of Győr as a relic of the liberation. In the middle of the 17th century, in 1661–1664, the fortifications were modernised. After the Turkish wars the castle lost its military importance; during the Napoleonic wars, in 1809, French troops blew up the walls, and the surviving parts were demolished by the town over the following decades.
The castle courtyard and casemate have housed the Roman and early-modern stone collection since 1957, as well as a permanent exhibition arranged from the brick collection of József Horváth. The exhibition site belongs to the Rómer Flóris Művészeti és Történeti Múzeum (Rómer Flóris Museum of Art and History), and it can be visited only in the spring–autumn season.
