About the museum

The predecessor of the museum was founded as an antiquities collection in 1859 at the Benedictine grammar school in Győr by the Benedictine teacher Rómer Flóris. The city museum and picture gallery were established in the 1930s, but much of their valuable material was taken abroad on the Gold Train at the end of the Second World War, and only a fraction returned in 1964.

From 1949 the collections were housed in the Apátúr House on Széchenyi tér, and from 1951 under the name Xántus János Múzeum. As the centre of the county museum network, the institution opened more and more exhibition venues: in 1957 the Vármúzeum (Castle Museum), in 1958 the Várkazamata–Kőtár (Castle Casemate – Lapidarium), in 1974 the Kovács Margit Collection, in 1979 the Borsos Miklós exhibition, in 1986 the Patkó Imre Collection and in 2008 the Fruhmann House.

In 1994 the city founded the Városi Művészeti Múzeum (City Art Museum) in the Magyar Ispita building, which in 2005 opened the exhibition of the Radnai Collection in the renovated Esterházy Palace. On 1 February 2013 the Xántus János Múzeum and the Városi Művészeti Múzeum merged: the new institution took the name Rómer Flóris Művészeti és Történeti Múzeum and operates under municipal maintenance with county competence.

Visitors today can find the collections in several buildings in the city centre; the central exhibition venue, the Esterházy Palace, stands at the north-west corner of Széchenyi tér.
