About the museum

In the Vastuskós House, the Rómer Flóris Művészeti és Történeti Múzeum presents the Patkó Imre collection. The museum has used the building since 1983 to exhibit the 20th-century Hungarian and Western European art of Patkó Imre, as well as his East Asian and Oceanic collection.

The house was built at the end of the 17th century and was then one of the tallest buildings in the town and among the first with an upper floor. Its corner is decorated with a two-level cylindrical balcony resting on stone ribs and a square-plan enclosed baroque balcony. Among its early owners were two town councillors; at the beginning of the 18th century Gindl Orbán gave it its present two-storey form.

It takes its name from the vastuskó (iron post) on its corner. According to legend, journeymen leaving Győr hammered nails into it. The iron post was made in 1829 by Zittritsch Mátyás as the sign of his shop; when he moved his shop elsewhere in 1833, he took it with him, but the house was later still named after the post.
