About the museum
In August 2009, Dr. Gyugyi László, an art collector living in the United States, agreed with the city of Pécs to sell his collection of close to 700 individual Zsolnay pieces to the city for half of its estimated market value. Pécs undertook to present the collection in a separate exhibition in a fitting setting.
The first building of the Zsolnay Kulturális Negyed (Zsolnay Cultural Quarter) to be completed was the Art Nouveau villa of the Sikorski family, the Sikorski House. The exhibition “Gyugyi-gyűjtemény – A Zsolnay Aranykora” has been on view since 1 September 2010. The collection found its home in the city’s new cultural district thanks to the Pécs2010 European Capital of Culture programme.
The objects on display are products of the factory’s 40-year period between 1870 and 1910, divided into three major eras: historicism, the millennium and Art Nouveau. A special feature is that early, signed pieces painted by Zsolnay Teréz and Júlia themselves are also on view. From the technique developed for the millennium came the eosin, the iridescent glaze that made the factory world-famous.
