About the museum
The exhibition “Kezdetben volt a rózsaszín…” presents the private collection of more than a thousand pieces by the architect, academician and Doctor of Arts Winkler Barnabás, drawn from the very varied pink products of the Zsolnay factory intended for everyday use. From the foundation of the factory these objects were made for decades, in large quantities and with increasing quality, until the turn of the century; together with the thin-walled water pipes and terracotta architectural elements, they provided the livelihood of the growing factory.
Zsolnay Ignác, the elder son of the founder Zsolnay Miklós, led the manufactory from 1853 to 1865; after his younger brother Zsolnay Vilmos took over the factory, the range of pink products developed spectacularly from the 1880s. The entrance hall evokes the atmosphere of the former storeroom of pink products.
The exhibition shows that in the first decades the objects were mostly made by hand, so no two are alike: the spout, the handle, the shape and the shade of the glaze also differ.
