Zsolnay Mauzóleum

The neo-Romanesque burial chapel of the Zsolnay family on the hill beside the factory, with an eosin sarcophagus and pyrogranite decoration.

About the museum

The mausoleum was built after the death of the factory founder, Zsolnay Vilmos, in 1900, by his son Miklós, on the hill directly adjoining the factory, where the town's execution site once stood. The small hill had been a favourite spot of the factory founder, from where he liked to look down at the factory. Construction began in 1901 to plans by the architect Sikorski Tádé; every detail of the building was made by the factory's workers.

The neo-Romanesque building contains a burial chapel and, below it, a burial chamber with an ornate eosin sarcophagus and 32 coffin niches. The façade is covered with unglazed pyrogranite panels, and the hemispherical dome is covered with dark green majolica-glazed shaped tiles. The chapel contains an eosin altar and an eternal light, and its walls are decorated with coloured tiles. The entire sculptural decoration of the interior is the work of Apáti Abt Sándor, the factory's leading sculptor. The dome shows the blue sky, cherubs and golden stars.

The bronze coffin of Zsolnay Vilmos was placed in the family crypt in 1913, followed in 1919 by his wife, Bell Terézia; apart from them, only their son Miklós rests here today. The complete renovation of the building, badly damaged by vandalism, took place as part of the Európa Kulturális Fővárosa (European Capital of Culture) programme, based on the original plans and photographs.
